As part of the recent World Wetlands day ACT Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said that should take the opportunity discover more about the importance of wetland ecosystems at the Jerrabomberra Wetlands Open Day on Sunday 7 February.
“If you’ve ever wanted to find out more about our wetlands, come along to the exciting and fun-filled World Wetlands Open Day at the Jerrabomberra Wetlands from 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday 7 February 2016,” Minister Fitzharris commented “Jerrabomberra Wetlands are just a hop, skip and a jump from the Kingston Foreshore and many people may not realise we have such a natural treasure on our urban doorstep.”
Minister Fitzarris said that the open day is a community event hosted by the Woodlands and Wetlands Trust in partnership with the ACT Government. It will be a great way to spend time with the family in the great outdoors, encounter wildlife and discover more about our wetland ecosystems.
The Minister went on to explain that entry is by gold coin donation with all proceeds supporting the work of the Woodlands and Wetlands Trust at Jerrabomberra Wetlands. The day will include a number of guided discovery walks where people can learn about wetlands flora and fauna, Indigenous culture and heritage and European history. The guided walks will leave from the Jerrabomberra Wetlands offices every half hour from 10.30 am to 2 pm.
“There will be a number of informative displays, an art gallery featuring local and regional artists, food stalls, a hands-on reptile exhibit and a ‘kids corner’ to keep children entertained with fire trucks, Indigenous face painting, native animal tattoos, a book corner and water games. The Wetlands are also easily accessible by cycle path – so why not leave the car at home. You can stop at the Wetlands for a coffee or cold drink at the Cycle Café, which will be set up along the bike path, or even enjoy lunch before strolling up to the open day festivities,” Minister Fitzharris commented.
