National Pear Month

Fancy that, March is the first National Pear Month. Restaurants are being encouraged put pears on their menu in support of local growers and sustainable farming and consumers are urged to enjoy seasonal pears in new and interesting ways.
“Where possible Australians should buy Australian produce and support the local industry. March is peak season for Australian pears so consumers will now see a bumper crop of juicy fruit on shelf to enjoy,” says pear grower Jimmy Kalafatis.
There are eight pear varieties, each with their own micro-season. Those varieties include Red Sensation, Beurre Bosc and Winter Nelis are in season this March.
In Australia, 130,000 tonnes of pears are grown annually with Williams’ pears making up 47% of the total crop. It should also be noted that The Williams’ pear has been grown in Australian for over 120 years.
