Minister for the Environment and Heritage Mick Gentleman today officially launched the Canberra and Region Heritage Festival, which is back for its 35th year celebrating the diverse range of voices that make up our local identity. The 2017 Canberra and Region Heritage Festival runs from 18 April to 7 May.
“This year’s festival coincides with the 50th anniversary of the 1967 constitutional referendum that saw Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders included in the census, and thus legally considered as Australian citizens,” Minister Gentleman commented “The theme for this year’s festival ‘Questions & Change’ celebrates past decades, including those intangible aspects such as stories, customs and traditions.”
Minister Gentleman explained that over three weeks there are many fun, educational and interactive activities that celebrate our unique region. Uncover the hidden mysteries of Lake George, be part of a graveyard tour, learn about the history of the National Carillon or explore the Gungahlin Homestead in Crace, which is open to the public for the first time. The Minister added that there is much on offer for local and interstate visitors to be involved in the 50th anniversary of the 1967 constitutional referendum including traditional weaving workshops and a chance to travel back in time to ‘The Dreaming’ with an experienced Aboriginal guide.
